SEO: how it helps people find your website

Search engine optimisation brings visitors who are already looking for what you offer. See where to start and what really counts.

SEO search bar with a rising chart

When someone searches Google for a service or product, they rarely go past the first page of results. SEO (search engine optimisation) is the set of actions that helps your website appear there. The traffic it brings is not paid per click and comes from people who are already looking for what you offer.

Start with keywords

The first step is to understand how your customers search. They often use different words from the ones you use inside the business. For example, they search for "network technician Athens", not "network infrastructure solutions".

  • Use tools such as Google Keyword Planner and Search Console to see what people search for.
  • Choose specific phrases with a location or intent, such as "Starlink installation Corinthia".
  • Set one main phrase for each page, so your pages do not compete with each other.
  • Write naturally. Repeating the same word in every sentence hurts rather than helps.

Content that answers questions

Search engines want to show the page that best answers the user's question. That means original, useful and up-to-date content. A service page with three general sentences will struggle to stand out against a page that explains exactly what you do, how and for whom.

  • One page for each service, with a specific description, process and frequently asked questions.
  • Articles that answer your customers' real questions.
  • Regular updates to pages that are out of date, such as old prices or services.

Write down the questions customers ask you most often on the phone. Each one is a possible article or FAQ section that other people are already searching for on Google.

Technical optimisation

Even the best content struggles if the website has technical problems. Technical SEO makes sure search engines can find, read and understand your pages.

  • A unique title and meta description on every page.
  • A proper heading hierarchy: one H1, then H2 and H3 in a logical order.
  • Clean URLs in Latin characters that describe the content.
  • A sitemap.xml file and registration of the website in Google Search Console.
  • Descriptive text (alt) on images.
  • 301 redirects when a page's address changes, so ranking is not lost.

Speed and the mobile experience

Google mainly assesses the mobile version of a website and takes page speed and stability (Core Web Vitals) into account. A slow page loses visitors before it even loads. Compressed images, fewer plugins, caching and fast hosting make a big difference.

Links from other websites

Links (backlinks) from trusted, relevant websites work like recommendations. Quality matters far more than quantity. Avoid services that sell hundreds of links, because they can lead to a penalty.

  • Listings in reputable business directories and chambers of commerce.
  • Links from partners, suppliers and industry bodies.
  • Articles or interviews in trade media.

Local SEO

For a business that serves a specific area, the Google Business profile is one of the most important tools. Fill in your address, phone number, opening hours, category and photos correctly. Make sure the same details appear exactly the same on your website and in directories.

Ask satisfied customers to leave a Google review and reply to all of them, positive and negative. Reviews help both your ranking and the next customer's decision.

Measure and improve

SEO is not a one-off task. Results usually take months to show and depend on the competition. With Google Search Console and Google Analytics, you see which searches you appear for, which pages bring visitors and where you lose customers.

Common mistakes that cost you

  • The same title and description on every page.
  • All services on one page, with no separate content for each.
  • A new website with no redirects from the old addresses.
  • Very large images that slow down loading on mobile.
  • Text copied from other websites or from the manufacturer.

If you are changing your website, make a list before the move of all the old addresses and the matching new page for each one. With proper 301 redirects, visitors and search engines land in the right place and the website keeps the ranking it has built.
