Overview

What a proper security camera installation includes

Security camera installation for a business is more than putting cameras on walls. It takes a plan of what needs to be seen, the right camera and lens for each spot, a recorder with enough storage, and settings that keep the system secure and in line with data protection rules.

As an IT company and a licensed security-systems installer, we set up cameras the way we set up a network: tested PoE cabling, a separate VLAN, changed passwords and proper documentation. We mostly work with Hikvision and Dahua and, for small premises, Reolink.

We carry out CCTV installation in Athens and across Attica: shops, offices, warehouses, restaurants and homes. The site visit for your security camera installation is free, and for simple premises we can give a first estimate from photos.

The service

What's included

Site survey and camera plan

We mark entrances, tills, storerooms, the perimeter and parking on a floor plan, together with the lighting at each spot. For every camera we define the field of view and what it must identify: a face, a number plate or simply movement.

PoE IP cameras

One network cable per camera carries both power and video. More dependable than Wi-Fi cameras, with central power that can sit on a UPS alongside the recorder.

Resolution, lens and night

4MP or 8MP cameras, fixed or varifocal lenses, and night recording in infrared or full colour, chosen for the distance and lighting at each spot.

NVR and recording drives

A recorder with drives built for continuous 24/7 recording, sized for the number of cameras, the resolution and the number of days footage must be kept.

Camera network security

A separate VLAN, no factory passwords, up-to-date firmware and remote access without opening ports on your business router.

GDPR-ready installation

Positions that do not record the street or neighbours, privacy masks, no audio, automatic overwrite after 15 days, and a suggested position and wording for the notice sign.

Technology

PoE IP cameras, Wi-Fi or analogue HD-TVI?

PoE IP cameras are now the default choice for business security cameras. Each camera connects with a Cat6 network cable to a PoE switch or straight into the NVR, takes its power from there and sends high-resolution video. They give a better picture, smart detection and are easy to expand with one more port.

Wi-Fi cameras suit very small premises or places where cabling is genuinely impossible. They still need a power socket nearby, depend on the quality of the wireless signal and can drop video when the network is busy. For the spots that matter, such as the till and the entrance, we always prefer a cable.

Analogue HD-TVI or AHD systems on coaxial cable are still found in many shops. If the picture is good enough for you and the DVR works, there is no need to rush a replacement. Upgrading to IP makes sense when you want a clear image of faces and number plates, person and vehicle detection, or when the DVR runs old software that no longer gets security updates.

When upgrading, and on any new camera fitting, we often reuse existing trunking and cable routes for the new network cables to keep disruption down. Where a point cannot be recabled, there are ways to carry network signals over the existing coaxial cable, which we look at case by case.

Choosing cameras

Resolution, lenses, night vision and AI detection

More megapixels do not always mean a better picture. What matters is how many pixels land on the face or number plate you need to identify, and how well the camera copes when the light drops.

4MP for most spots

A good balance of detail, low-light performance and disk usage. Right for entrances, corridors, tills and indoor areas up to a few metres away.

8MP (4K) for wide areas

For open spaces, warehouses, car parks and yards where you want to zoom into recordings without losing detail. It needs more storage and better lighting.

Fixed or varifocal lens

A 2.8mm lens gives a wide angle for short distances. Further away, a 4mm or 6mm lens, or a varifocal lens adjusted on site, narrows in on the spot and gives a recognisable image.

Night recording, mono or colour

Infrared illumination gives a black-and-white image in total darkness. Cameras with low-light sensors or white light give colour at night too, useful when the colour of clothing or a car matters.

Person and vehicle detection

AI cameras tell people and vehicles apart from leaves, shadows and animals. With rules such as line crossing or zone intrusion, you get an alert only when someone enters the yard out of hours.

Built for outdoors

For outdoor spots we choose cameras with suitable weather sealing, such as IP66 or IP67, and where there is a risk, IK10 vandal resistance. Connections are sealed in weatherproof boxes.

Storage

NVR and drives: how much storage you need

Storage depends on three things: how many cameras you have, what resolution and quality they record at, and how many days footage must be kept. Compression, H.265 or H.264, also plays a part, as does whether recording is continuous or only on motion.

As a rough guide, a 4MP H.265 camera recording continuously at 4 Mbps fills about 40 to 45 GB a day. Eight such cameras for 15 days need around 5 TB. Motion-only recording cuts this noticeably, while 8MP cameras roughly double it.

To work it out yourself, you will find an NVR storage calculator in the Tools section of this site: enter the number of cameras, resolution and days, and see how many TB you need. In the plan we choose an NVR with the channels and bandwidth you need, plus headroom for future cameras.

We use drives designed for 24/7 video recording, not desktop drives. On larger systems we recommend an NVR with several drives and RAID protection, so a single drive failure does not wipe the archive. The NVR is set to overwrite the oldest footage automatically.

Security and app

Cameras that do not become a back door into your network

A camera with a factory password and an open port to the internet is one of the most common ways into a company network. As a network company, this is the first thing we take care of.

Separate VLAN

Cameras and the NVR sit on their own network segment. They cannot see your computers and do not talk to the internet without a reason.

No default passwords

We change every factory password, switch off services that are not needed and create a separate account for each user, with only the rights they need.

Up-to-date firmware

We install the current firmware on cameras and the NVR at handover. With a support contract, we apply updates when the manufacturer fixes security flaws.

No open P2P ports

We do not set up port forwarding on the router. We prefer access over VPN, and if the manufacturer's cloud service is used, we lock it down with a strong password and two-step verification, or turn it off if you do not need it.

App for phone and computer

Live view, event-based search through recordings and exporting a clip in a few minutes. We tune notifications so that only the meaningful ones reach you.

Cost and layouts

Security camera prices and typical layouts by premises

We do not publish fixed packages, because the cost of a security camera installation depends on the premises. The main factors are the number and type of cameras, resolution, storage, the length and difficulty of the cabling, mounting height and access, and whether existing infrastructure can be reused. The layouts below are the starting point for the plan.

Shop

A camera at the entrance for face identification, one over the till, one or two on the shop floor and one at the back door or storeroom. Usually 4 to 6 4MP cameras and an 8-channel NVR.

Office

Cameras at the main entrance, reception and rooms holding equipment or records, not over workstations. Often combined with access control at the entrance.

Warehouse

Perimeter 8MP or varifocal cameras for the yard and ramps, cameras on loading doors and racking aisles, out-of-hours line-crossing detection and strong night performance.

Restaurant and café

Entrance, till, dining room, terrace and the back delivery door. Never in changing rooms, toilets or staff rest areas, and in the kitchen only for a specific security reason.

What the quote includes

Equipment, cabling, mounting, image and detection settings, network security, the app on your phones and training. The quote lists equipment and labour separately.

What can be added

Trunking or a suspended ceiling where there is none, work at height or on a difficult facade, a UPS, an extra PoE switch, a monitor at the till, or a network upgrade when the existing one cannot handle the cameras.

How we work

How a security camera installation works, step by step

  1. Site visit or photos

We come to the premises, or you send us photos and a floor plan. We talk through what worries you and where problems have happened before.

  2. Camera plan and quote

We prepare a plan with positions, fields of view, camera types and NVR capacity. The quote breaks down equipment and labour.

  3. Cabling and mounting

We run network cables in trunking or the ceiling void, mount the cameras, NVR and PoE switch, and seal all outdoor connections.

  4. Image and detection settings

We set angles, focus, night mode, detection zones and rules, privacy masks and the retention period.

  5. Security and app

VLAN, passwords, firmware and remote access. We install the app on your phones with an account for each user.

  6. Handover and support

We show you how to find and export an event. We hand over the floor plan, passwords and equipment list, and stay available for maintenance and changes.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How much does security camera installation cost?
It depends on the number and type of cameras, resolution, storage, the length and difficulty of the cabling and access to the mounting points. A shop with 4 cameras and an easy cable route costs far less than a warehouse with 8MP perimeter cameras mounted high up. We offer a free site visit or an estimate from photos, and give you a written quote with equipment and labour listed separately.
How many cameras does a shop need?
Most small shops are covered with 4 to 6 cameras: entrance, till, shop floor and the back door or storeroom. The number goes up with floor area, extra floors, tall shelving that hides aisles and outdoor entrances. In the plan we mark each camera's field of view on a floor plan so there are no blind spots.
Wi-Fi cameras or wired cameras?
For a business we recommend wired PoE cameras. They run reliably, need no socket at the mounting point and are powered centrally from a UPS. Wi-Fi cameras only make sense in small spaces or at points where cabling is genuinely impossible.
When is it worth replacing an old analogue DVR system?
When the picture does not let you identify faces or number plates, when you want person and vehicle detection, or when the DVR no longer gets security updates. If the system works and covers your needs, you can switch gradually, starting with the key spots. During the site visit we check what can be reused.
How many TB of storage does the NVR need?
As a rough guide, eight 4MP H.265 cameras recording continuously for 15 days need about 5 TB. The figure changes with resolution, recording quality and whether you record continuously or on motion only. The Tools section of this site has an NVR storage calculator so you can work it out yourself.
Why keep footage for only 15 days if the drive holds more?
According to the Hellenic Data Protection Authority, businesses normally keep footage for up to 15 days, unless an incident is recorded, in which case that clip is kept for as long as the case requires. That is why we set the NVR to overwrite the oldest footage automatically. We are not lawyers: for specific cases, ask your legal adviser or the DPA.
Can a camera cover the street or pavement?
As a rule no, beyond what is strictly necessary to cover your own entrance. We choose angles that face your premises and, where needed, add privacy masks that hide parts of the image. The same applies to neighbouring properties and the entrances of other buildings.
Can the cameras record audio too?
Audio recording is generally not permitted in business video surveillance systems. Many cameras have a built-in microphone, so we disable it during setup. If you have a specific reason, discuss it with your legal adviser first.
Can I view the cameras on my phone without exposing my network?
Yes. We do not open ports on the router, and access goes through a VPN or through the manufacturer's cloud service with a strong password and two-step verification. Each user has their own account and sees only the cameras they are allowed to.
Can IP cameras be hacked?
Any network device can be a target, especially with a factory password, old firmware and an open port to the internet. With a separate VLAN, strong passwords, updates and access without port forwarding, the risk drops considerably. This is part of every installation we do.
What does person and vehicle detection (AI) do?
The camera recognises whether something moving is a person or a vehicle and ignores leaves, shadows, rain and animals. Alerts drop to the ones that matter, and searching recordings becomes much faster. With rules such as line crossing or zone intrusion, you also set the hours when you want to be alerted.
Does a security camera installer need a licence?
Companies that install security systems need a licence under Law 2518/1997. CyberSpace Dynamics is a licensed security-systems installer. Whoever you choose, ask to see the licence before you hire them.
Can I put cameras at the entrance of my apartment building?
Cameras in the common areas of an apartment building need a decision of the owners' general assembly. They must not look at the doors of individual flats, and there must be a notice sign. We are not lawyers: for the procedure, consult the building manager, your legal adviser or the DPA.
Do you maintain systems you did not install?
Yes. We check the cameras, NVR and drives, update firmware, change passwords and correct angles and settings. If the system has security gaps or cameras in positions that should not be recorded, we point them out with suggestions for fixing them.
