CCTV installation in Athens: what is different in the centre

CCTV installation in Athens, and in the city centre especially, comes with problems you rarely meet in a new building in the suburbs. Most properties around Omonia, Exarchia and Patisia were built decades ago, with no conduits for low-voltage cabling. Walls are thick, suspended ceilings are rare and the only space for a recorder is usually a cupboard.

So a site survey in the centre starts with where the cable will run, not with which camera to buy. We use existing conduits, the light well, decorative trunking or the route of the old telephone line. Each camera gets power and data over a single PoE cable, so it does not need a socket next to it.

Because our office is in Ampelokipi, Kolonaki, Syntagma and Alexandras Avenue are only minutes away. That makes it easy to come back for fine-tuning after a few days of operation, once you have seen how the system behaves by day and by night.

Shops on busy streets

A shop on Stadiou, Patision or Panormou Street wants to see the till, the entrance and the area with the expensive stock. It may not, however, record the pavement and passers-by beyond what is strictly necessary. We point the entrance camera inwards so it catches faces as people come in, and we add privacy masks wherever the frame touches the street.

A camera behind a shop window is often blinded at night by its own infrared reflecting off the glass. We solve it with a camera sealed against the glass, with infrared switched off and the window lit, or with a full-colour night camera. Above shutters and awnings we check what the camera will see when the shop is closed.

  • Impact-resistant (IK10) dome cameras wherever a hand can reach
  • One camera over the till, angled so it does not show card PINs
  • Recorder locked in a cupboard or mezzanine, not next to the counter

Cameras in Athens apartment buildings

In central apartment buildings the usual needs are the entrance, the letterboxes, the open ground floor (pilotis) and the garage. Common areas require a decision of the owners' general assembly before installation. Cameras must not look at flat doors or into neighbours' windows.

We usually suggest two to four cameras and a small NVR in the boiler room or the electrical panel cupboard. Only the building manager, or whoever the assembly appoints, can access recordings, with their own account. Footage is deleted automatically, normally within 15 days at most, unless an incident is recorded.

Offices, medical practices and listed buildings

In offices around Kolonaki and Vasilissis Sofias Avenue a camera makes sense at the entrance, at reception and in the server room, not above employees' desks. Staff are informed in advance and the cameras are not used to monitor their performance. In medical practices cameras stay at the entrance and waiting room, never in consulting rooms.

In neoclassical and listed buildings, anything fixed to the façade may need approval. In those cases we prefer small cameras under balconies or inside the entrance, and we discuss it with the owner or the building's engineer before drilling.

Power, internet and viewing on your phone

Old electrical installations in the centre often suffer outages and voltage dips. A small UPS on the NVR and the PoE switch keeps recording when a breaker trips, even if someone switches off the main supply. We size the UPS according to how many cameras it powers.

For phone viewing we put the cameras on a network separate from computers and card terminals, update the firmware and change every default password. As an IT and networking company we treat this as part of the installation, not an extra.

Why us in the centre

What a local technician gives you

Short distance

From Ampelokipi we reach Kolonaki, Syntagma, Exarchia and Patisia quickly, for the installation and for adjustments afterwards.

Tidy cabling

Trunking in the colour of the wall, routes through light wells and conduits. The system does not look like a rushed add-on.

Signage and notices

We hand over signs for placement before the recorded area and explain what your employees need to know.

Secure camera network

Separate VLAN, new passwords, updated firmware and an account per user for anyone who views recordings.

Recording through outages

A UPS for the NVR and switch, so the system does not shut down when power drops in an old building.

How we work

How an installation in the centre works

  1. Photos or a site visit

Send photos of the space or book a free site survey. We look at camera positions, cable routes and where the recorder will go.

  2. A proposal with views

We show you what each camera will and will not see, together with the equipment. For an apartment building, the proposal can go to the general assembly.

  3. Installation at times that suit you

In shops we work before opening or after closing, so trading is not interrupted. We leave the space clean.

  4. Set-up and handover

We set motion zones, privacy masks and automatic deletion. We install the app on your phone and show you how to export a clip.

Frequently asked questions

How much does CCTV installation in Athens cost?
It depends on the number and type of cameras, the resolution, the size of the hard drive and above all the cabling. In old buildings in the centre the cable route is often the largest part of the job. We do not publish prices, but after a free site survey or an estimate from photos we give you an itemised quote.
Can my shop camera see the pavement?
Only as far as is strictly necessary for your entrance. We point the camera inwards and digitally mask the part of the street that is not needed. We are not lawyers, so for specific cases ask your legal adviser or the Hellenic Data Protection Authority.
Do we need an assembly decision for cameras at the building entrance?
Yes, common areas need a decision of the owners' general assembly. We can prepare a short description with positions and views for you to discuss. The cameras must not show the doors of individual flats.
Why does the camera behind my shop window show a white image at night?
The camera's infrared reflects off the glass and blinds the lens. The fix is to seal the camera against the glass with a hood, switch off the infrared and light the window, or fit a full-colour night camera.
Can cameras be installed in a building with no conduits?
Yes. We use light wells, existing conduits and decorative trunking. Where no cable can pass we may consider a Wi-Fi camera for a single spot, but for the main system we prefer PoE cable because it is more reliable.
How many days does the system keep recordings?
We set automatic deletion, normally up to 15 days, as the Data Protection Authority expects. If an incident is recorded, that clip is kept for as long as the case needs. The drive is sized to cover that period with all cameras recording.
Can I visit your office to see cameras?
Yes, we are at 122 Alexandras Avenue, Monday to Friday 09:00–18:00 and Saturday 10:00–16:00. Let us know before you come so the technician who handles security systems is available.
