A smart home is no longer expensive or exotic. Many devices we buy today, from air conditioners to bulbs and plugs, already have Wi-Fi. The difference between a few "smart" devices and a smart home is that in a smart home everything works together, from one place, with rules that fit your daily routine.
What can be automated
- Lighting: morning and evening scenes, lights that switch on with motion, one button to turn everything off.
- Heating and cooling: a schedule per room and control from your phone before you arrive.
- Shutters and awnings: open at sunrise, close in strong wind or heat.
- Security: cameras, door and motion sensors, alerts on your phone.
- Energy: measuring consumption and automatically switching off devices left on.
The network is the foundation
Every smart device needs a stable connection. In a house with several floors or thick walls, a single router from your provider is rarely enough. Before adding devices, make sure you have good Wi-Fi coverage in every room, usually with mesh or with access points connected by cable.
In areas where the ground connection is weak, like many holiday homes, Starlink can provide the connection a house needs to be controlled remotely.
One system instead of ten apps
The most common mistake is buying devices from different manufacturers, each with its own app. After a while, nobody at home remembers which app controls what. A central controller such as Home Assistant brings devices from many manufacturers into one screen and lets them work together in automations.
Before buying a device, check whether it supports open standards such as Matter, Zigbee or local control without the cloud. That way it keeps working even if the manufacturer drops its app.
How to start
- Write down what bothers you day to day: lights left on, a high electricity bill, worry when you're away.
- Make sure Wi-Fi covers every room properly.
- Start with one room or one function, for example lighting or air conditioning.
- Choose a central controller and devices that work with it.
- Expand gradually, with rules that make sense for you.
