Starlink installation in Rhodes and the Dodecanese: where it is needed

A Starlink installation in Rhodes and Kos is mostly about what lies outside the towns. Rhodes town and Kos town have good fixed lines in many places, but inland villages and southern Rhodes, or detached houses in the Kos countryside, often do not.

On the smaller islands it is harder still. On Leipsoi, Tilos, Nisyros, Halki, Agathonisi or Kastellorizo, the fixed line may be slow or non-existent, and mobile signal depends on where in the house you stand. For people who live there year-round, work remotely or let rooms, Starlink is often the only connection good enough for video calls and streaming.

Small islands with weak lines: Starlink as the main connection

When Starlink is a home's only connection, the installation needs more care. There is no fallback if the dish moves or the router sits in the wrong place. We mount the dish permanently, run the cable in trunking and place the router where it covers the whole house, with mesh where the walls are thick stone.

We often add a UPS to keep equipment running through short power cuts, and a small 4G router as a second connection where there is mobile signal. Everything is set up so we can help remotely, because on a small island there is no technician round the corner.

  • A permanent metal mount, not the kit's ground stand
  • Router in a central spot and mesh for stone walls
  • UPS for short power cuts
  • A 4G second connection where there is signal
  • Remote access for support

Hotels in Rhodes and Kos: Starlink as a second line

The large hotels of Rhodes and Kos usually have a fixed connection, but a line fault at full occupancy stops reception, bookings, POS and guest Wi-Fi all at once. Starlink goes in as a backup on a failover router, so critical operations carry on.

We work with the hotel's IT manager or take on the network ourselves. We separate hotel operations from the guest network with VLANs, so that on failover the tills and booking system get priority. For smaller properties in villages without a good line, Starlink can also be the main connection.

Boats in the marinas of Rhodes, Kos and Leros

The Dodecanese has many boats that spend the season in the area and quite a few that winter in marinas and boatyards, such as in Rhodes, Kos and Leros. Installing Starlink on a boat is easiest while it is moored or on the hard, before the season starts.

On boats the decisions differ from a house: Starlink Mini or Standard depending on size and power draw, a 12V or 24V supply, a stainless pole or arch mount, and the right Starlink plan for use at sea. For boats we work with CS Maritime, the group's sister brand for maritime IT. See our Starlink installation on boats page for more.

How we get to the Dodecanese

Rhodes and Kos have flights from Athens, so for jobs there we fly and ship materials ahead. For the smaller islands we continue on the local ferries from Rhodes or Kos. When the job needs a mast or heavy materials, we take the ferry from Piraeus.

Ferries to the small islands are cancelled in bad weather. So we keep a spare day in the schedule and tell you straight away if anything needs to change. Where possible we combine jobs on neighbouring islands so travel costs are shared.

Frequently asked questions

Is Starlink worth it in Rhodes if the town has a good fixed line?
In town, for a household, usually not. It is worth it in villages and detached houses outside town where the line is slow, and for businesses and hotels that want a second connection for failover.
Do you install Starlink on small islands like Leipsoi or Tilos?
Yes. For the small islands we travel via Rhodes or Kos on the local ferries and, where possible, combine several jobs in the same area. The estimate from photos lets us bring every material with us, since there is no shop there for anything missing.
What happens if the ferry is cancelled because of the weather?
We keep a spare day in the schedule for exactly this. If the cancellation lasts longer, we let you know and book a new date as soon as possible. We explain in the quote how we handle such delays.
Can Starlink be a backup line for a hotel?
Yes, and it is one of its most common uses in hotels. It connects alongside the fixed line on a failover router, and we configure it so that during a fault reception, bookings and POS take priority over guest Wi-Fi.
Starlink Mini or Standard for a boat in the marina?
The Mini is small, draws less power and suits smaller boats or limited power. The Standard is preferred on larger boats with more users. We choose with you based on the boat, the batteries and the use.
Can you fit Starlink while the boat is on the hard for winter?
Yes, and it is often the best time, as access is easy and the job is not squeezed between charters. We test the connection ashore and, if needed, do a final check once the boat is back in the water.
How much does a Starlink installation in the Dodecanese cost?
It depends on the mount, the cabling, whether mesh, a UPS or failover is needed, and on travel, which differs between Rhodes and a small island. The kit and subscription are charged by Starlink at the prices on starlink.com/gr. For the labour we give a free estimate from photos.
