Starlink installation in Crete: where it makes sense

A Starlink installation in Crete makes most sense where the fixed line does not reach well. Central Heraklion and Chania have fibre on many streets, but a few kilometres out the picture changes quickly: villages on the slopes of Psiloritis, in the Lefka Ori, on the Lasithi Plateau, in Apokoronas and along the south coast often have slow VDSL or no line at all.

People who ask us for Starlink in Crete tend to fall into three groups. Owners of village houses who want to work from there, owners of villas and holiday lets who need reliable guest Wi-Fi, and farm businesses such as olive mills, wineries, greenhouses and livestock units, which are by nature outside the towns.

How we organise Starlink trips to Crete

We are based in Athens, so every installation in Crete involves travel. To keep that cost down, we group jobs by prefecture and set dates once there is enough work in the same area. If you are in a hurry we make a dedicated trip, with its cost shown upfront in the quote.

How we travel depends on the job. When a mast, large mounts or long cable runs are needed, we take the ferry from Piraeus to Heraklion or Souda with the van and tools. For lighter jobs we fly and ship materials ahead.

If you want Starlink ready for the summer season, contact us in winter or spring. In June and July the ferries are full and there is less room to manoeuvre.

  • Jobs grouped by prefecture to lower travel costs
  • Ferry with the van for heavy materials, flights for light jobs
  • Travel cost written into the quote upfront
  • Pre-season scheduling for villas and holiday lets

Estimates from photos and preparation in Athens

Before arranging a trip, we want to know the spot will work. We ask for photos of the roof from several angles, a short video panning round the horizon and, if you already have the kit, the obstruction check from the Starlink app. From these we give a written estimate and know which mount and how much cable to bring.

While still in Athens, we configure the router, mesh, separate guest network or VPN, and label the cables. That way our time at your property goes on installation and testing, not on settings that could have been done beforehand. If the owner is abroad, someone just needs to let us in on the day.

Wind, salt and sun: mounting for Cretan conditions

Crete gets strong winds, especially on high ground, in gaps between mountains and along the south coast. A dish on a makeshift stand or a mount held by a few screws can shift and lose signal. We use metal brackets fixed to solid walls, or masts with stays where needed.

Near the sea, salt quickly corrodes ordinary hardware, so we prefer galvanised or stainless fittings. Strong sun degrades cables and trunking not rated for outdoor use, so exposed runs go in UV-resistant trunking.

Stone village houses have thick walls. That means more careful drilling for the cable and, usually, mesh or wired access points to get Wi-Fi from room to room.

Villas, holiday lets and farm businesses

At villas and Airbnb-style lets, guests judge the Wi-Fi as much as the pool. We set up a separate guest network, outdoor coverage and, if you like, entrance cameras you can view on your phone. Everything is configured so we can also manage it remotely.

At olive mills and packing plants the connection matters most during the production season, when invoices are issued and sent to myData. There we suggest Starlink with failover to 4G/5G or a fixed line, so losing one connection does not stop invoicing. For larger operations, see our Starlink for business page.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can't find what you're looking for? Call us or send us a message.

Do you cover all of Crete or only the towns?
All of Crete, from Kissamos to Sitia and from Heraklion to the villages on the south coast. Mountain and remote spots are exactly where Starlink is needed most. Travel time within the island is included in the estimate.
How much does a Starlink installation in Crete cost?
The cost is made up of labour, mounting and cabling materials, and travel from Athens. Travel comes down when we combine your job with others in the same prefecture. The kit and subscription are charged by Starlink at the prices on starlink.com/gr. Send us photos for a free written estimate.
How early should I book a Starlink installation in Crete?
For villas and holiday lets, ideally in winter or early spring, so the connection is tested before the first guests arrive. For homes and businesses we set a date as soon as we have the estimate and the kit.
Does Starlink work in a village with a mountain behind the house?
Often yes, but it depends which side the mountain is on. In Greece the dish usually faces north, so a mountain or high hill to the north of the house blocks more sky. The app's obstruction check, done before the trip, shows whether a mast or another spot on the plot is needed.
Can I have the Starlink kit delivered straight to Crete?
Yes, you can order it to the property's address. If you want us to configure the router and mesh beforehand, it is more practical to have it delivered to Athens and we bring it with the materials.
Will the dish survive Crete's strong winds?
The dish is designed for outdoor use; the weak point is usually the mount. That is why we use a metal bracket on a solid wall or a mast with stays, rather than the kit's ground stand for permanent use in exposed spots.
Can villa guests have their own Wi-Fi?
Yes. We set up a guest network separate from the owner's network, cameras and smart devices. Guests cannot see your devices, and you can change their password without affecting anything else.
What if I need help after the installation?
Most issues, such as password changes, router settings or connection checks, are solved remotely. If a physical fix is needed, we schedule it on our next trip to Crete or as a separate visit, whichever suits you.
