Starlink installation in Pelion: trees, slopes and seasons

Pelion's villages are built on steep slopes inside one of the densest forests in the country. For Starlink that means two obstacles: the tall trees around the house and, in villages on the western and southern side, the mountain itself, which can hide part of the northern sky the dish usually points towards.

There is also a detail that is often forgotten. Chestnuts, plane trees and beeches lose their leaves in winter. An obstruction check in January may show clear sky, while in June, in full leaf, the same spot suffers dropouts. That is why we always plan the position around summer foliage.

In northern Pelion, in Makrinitsa, Portaria, Zagora and Tsagarada, and in the south, in Milies, Argalasti and Vyzitsa, every house has a different horizon. Often the best position is not on the house but on a terrace wall or a corner of the yard, with the cable running from there.

Pelion slate roofs: how we mount without damage

Slate is beautiful but brittle. One wrong step cracks it, and a hole in the wrong place causes a leak that shows up in the first heavy rain. Repairs also need a craftsman and material that is not easy to find. So we avoid walking on the roof or drilling through it.

In most cases we find a solution without touching the slate at all. If there is no other option, we work from a ladder or cherry picker and seal every fixing point.

  • Mount on a stone wall or the gable end of the house
  • Fixing to a solid chimney with special straps, no drilling
  • Pole fixed to a terrace wall, boundary wall or flat roof
  • Ballasted mount on a level spot in the yard
  • Cable run under the eaves and through existing openings

Traditional settlements and guesthouses

Many Pelion villages are designated traditional settlements and have rules about what is visible on façades and roofs. It is wise to check with the relevant building authority before installation. We choose positions that cannot be seen from the cobbled path or the square, and cable in a colour that blends with the stone.

Guesthouses and mansions have thick stone walls, several levels and often separate buildings for the rooms. We install access points in each building, linked by cable where possible, with a separate network for guests and another for reception and bookings.

Pelion has visitors in winter too, thanks to the ski centre and the mountain villages. At high spots such as Chania, the dish must sit above the snow that builds up, and the power supply must cope with the extra consumption of the snow-melt function.

The Sporades: Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonissos

We reach the Sporades by ferry from Volos, and Skiathos by air too when the job does not need heavy equipment. Because islands do not always stock the materials you need, we prepare the entire installation in advance from photos and bring spare materials with us.

In summer the ferries fill up and winter has fewer sailings, so we schedule the visit around the timetable and the time the job needs. Skopelos and Skiathos also have plenty of pines, while on exposed spots the summer wind and salt call for a strong, corrosion-resistant mount.

Volos and lowland Magnesia

In Volos most requests come from businesses wanting a second line for failover and from homes in areas without fibre. In an apartment block, mounting on the roof terrace usually needs the co-owners' consent. On the Almyros plain and in southern Magnesia, farms and warehouses are connected with one dish and a wireless link to the other buildings.

  4. Damage-free installation

Frequently asked questions

Can Starlink go on a Pelion slate roof without damaging it?
Yes, and usually without touching the slate at all. We fix the dish to a stone wall, to the chimney with straps, or to a pole in the yard. If the only good position is on the roof, we work from a ladder or cherry picker and seal every point.
Do I need a permit for the dish in a traditional Pelion settlement?
Traditional settlements may restrict visible fixtures on façades and roofs. Ask the relevant building authority before installation. We suggest positions that cannot be seen from the street, so the intervention is as discreet as possible.
The trees lose their leaves in winter. Will I have problems in summer?
You might, if the position was chosen with bare branches. Chestnut or plane foliage blocks signal that passed freely in winter. That is why we choose a position with clear sky even in full leaf, often with a slightly taller pole.
Do you install Starlink on Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonissos?
Yes. We travel by ferry from Volos and, for Skiathos, by air when the equipment allows. Because the visit depends on the timetable, it takes a little more planning than on the mainland.
How much does a Starlink installation in Pelion or the Sporades cost?
The labour depends on the type of mount, whether a pole is needed to lift the dish above the trees, the length of the cable route and Wi-Fi coverage for guesthouses with several buildings. For the Sporades, ferry tickets are added. The kit and subscription are priced by Starlink on starlink.com/gr. Send photos for a free estimate.
Is one Starlink enough for a guesthouse with many rooms?
For most small guesthouses, yes, provided the network is set up properly, with access points in each building and a speed limit per guest. If you have many rooms or a restaurant with a POS, we look at a second connection as backup.
What about snow in Pelion's high villages?
The dish has a snow-melt function, which does increase power consumption. We mount it higher than the snow that collects on the roof or ground, and away from spots where snow slides off tiles or slate.

Want Starlink at your house or guesthouse in Pelion?

Send us photos of the roof and the trees around the house. We will propose a position and a mount that leave no mark on the slate.
